I enjoyed this recent podcast interview with writer Emily Nussbaum on what she describes as the renaissance in children’s programming. As an artist in the business and a parent I was interested in what she had to say.
Saddling Up for Oki’s Oasis
I’m getting started on my new job as color and background artists for Oki’s Oasis, which just got greenlit by Disney. I’m excited to be working with Denis Morella and the rest of the gang at Wild Brain on this cute new CGI pre-school show. I will be doing color key paintings for backgrounds, plus props and character color, similar to my work on Bubble Guppies. My upbringing in the southwest by a family of cowboy types will help tremendously. Yee-haw!
And now for something completely different
I had a great time working with my friend Eric Schweickert on this illustration for a local brewery. Eric wanted to have a painted illustration in a retro 60′s style. He spent a lot of time gathering reference and composing an image using vintage photographs. I simply went in and painted the image directly on top in Photoshop. The challenge was to try and give it a painted look without getting all Photoshoppy with it. I’ve never liked how Photoshop brushes look. No matter what you do they never feel like an actual brush made the marks. So I worked really hard to use a variety of scanned brushes and use them as stamps to build up the image with real brush strokes. I like how it turned out for the most part, I think it’s a technique that deserves more exploration. I really love commercial illustration from the 60s and 70s and have a ton of projects that can benefit from the technique. .
Looney Tunes Show
After Scooby Doo ended I had the opportunity to do some freelance painting for Warner’s Looney Tunes Show under the art direction of industry vet John Calmette. This turned into a fairly steady gig for me and I really enjoyed the work. Episodes I worked on are just starting to air now.

Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. “Siren’s Song”
Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. Season 1. “Dragon’s Secret”
These are 3 background paintings from the opening sequence of “Dragon’s Secret”. I did several paintings for this episode, but these are definitely the stand outs. I love the alleyway pan.
Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated Season 1
This is a selection of background paintings from Season 1 of Cartoon Network’s Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. All images are property of Warner Bros. Animation. Art direction by Dan Krall
